ECMA Fun – Sydney, Nova Scotia
May 5th, 2016
So here we were – 3 intrepid travelling musicians loading our guts and our gear into my beautiful red Buick for 5 days in Sydney, Nova Scotia at the East Coast Music Awards Week. I only took 4 pairs of shoes and 3 pairs of boots. Including my Nashville bought cowboy boots that I never got to wear because it never stopped raining…. But that’s ok. I also bought a gorgeous pair of Vince Camuto purple flats at this fantastic second hand place – Gala – they were $16!!! And in brand new shape!
Sharing the ride with me is Mark Skinner on the left and Mr. Jon Matthews on my right. Mark was nominated for Dance Recording of the Year, I was nominated for Gospel Recording of the Year and Jon was nominated for Studio Engineer of the Year. NONE OF US WON, but we had a great time and that’s the truth. I did, however, come home with strep throat. Yup. Nope. Not nice. But it’s gone now and I’m happy about that.
We all had a ball, and I have to say that I heard some of the best music I’ve ever heard in my LIFE. I saw 2 incredible bands that I’m ashamed to say I hadn’t heard before – they’re both from PEI and I’m probably related to some of them! I was simply blown away by Andrew Waite and the Firm and and Coyote. I’m officially a fan of both now.
Then… THEN… I saw Hillsburn. If you don’t listen to anything else I have to say, take a listen to this band. It is seriously the best songwriting and melody twisting I’ve ever heard, and I’m not kidding a little bit. I was mesmerized by them and we listened to their CD twice back to back on the way home. The lyrics are so powerful, they rip the heart right out of your chest, stomp on it, and just when you think you’re done, they pick your heart up off the pavement and give it back. I’m telling you, folks, take a listen. It’ll be the best 45 minutes you spend.
As I said, I didn’t win my category, and as cheesy as it sounds, it IS true – it really is an honor to be nominated and to have the chance to attend ECMA,
meet a bunch of really cool people and hear some incredible music. ANDDDDDD, I did NOT buy new shoes (I had a sparkly pair picked out) but I did get to buy a new dress! I love this dress and I think I looked pretty good! Can you see the shoes? They’re awesome and sparkly and fantastic!
Admittedly, not a great picture… Where’s the paparazzi when you need em?
I saw the giant fiddle (that’s me at the bottom), found the only Starbucks the first night and became a regular, and didn’t eat crap the whole time. Well, that’s a lie, now, isn’t it.
On the way home, it was just me and Jon Matthews who is a bona-fide Cape Bretonner from North Sydney. It seems there was no way we were getting out of Sydney without a stop at the world-famous Lick-a-Chick; this fried chicken place that kicks KFC’s keister 4 times over. It’s a staple like milk over there, and I can see why. Didn’t matter that we had a 6 hour drive ahead and that we only left the event at 5pm Sunday evening, we were stopping. I order the 3 piece meal with fries and ate the whole thing! Jon got 2 pieces in his belly and packed it in. And if that wasn’t enough, we had to stop at this pizza place in Antigonish – Wheel Pizza – because he’s not allowed to go home without Wheel pizza if he passes anywhere near it. By order of his wife. So we ate that too, and it was gooooood.
Five days went by in a heartbeat and now we’re looking forward to Music PEI Awards. Check out the next post to see all about that!
By the way, did I tell you I’m working on a Christmas album…….
